The microphone in Studio 4A

above left - On the right of the picture is studio 4B, and on the left the News Editor's cubicle. There was a direct phone link to the News Offices so that late news could be passed to the Editor with a minimum of delay.

The shot above shows Christopher Stone in 4B in 1933 and the one below right may be later, possible 1936. The mic this time is a Marconi-Reisz carbon. More here.

4A and 4B were both 12' x 7' x 8' high, 670 cu. ft. They had dead acoustics.

Reading a news bulletinBoth studios were equipped with two gramophone units and a mixer to combine their outputs with that of the microphone. These studios were also used for the majority of gramophone recitals, the gramophone points in other studios being intended mainly for special effects.
