The Long Man of Wilmington
18" x 24". Alkyd. 1985.
The Long Man is on the downs near the village of Wilmington. Its age is uncertain but
he may date back to the Neolithic period. The figure is 227 feet high, the staves he
holds are slightly longer. He was restored in the 19th century and again more recently.
When you get close to the figure it comes as a shock to realise that it is no longer
cut into the grass revealing chalk but is made of what look like kerb stones!
